What to do before you turn 65
A simple, step-by-step look at the decisions ahead — and how José can help with each one.
Confirm your eligibility
Most people become eligible for Medicare at 65. If you're already receiving Social Security, you may be enrolled automatically; otherwise you'll need to sign up.
Understand Original Medicare
Learn what Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) cover, and what out-of-pocket costs you'll still be responsible for.
Decide on additional coverage
Consider whether a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, and a Part D drug plan fit your needs.
Know your enrollment window
Your Initial Enrollment Period gives you a window to sign up. Timing matters — missing it can lead to gaps or penalties.
Your Initial Enrollment Period, explained
When you turn 65, you get a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Medicare. It typically begins three months before your birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after. Acting during this window matters — it's usually when you have the most options and the fewest restrictions.
If you're already receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65, you may be enrolled in Part A and Part B automatically, and your card may arrive in the mail. If you're not yet receiving those benefits, you'll generally need to sign up yourself.
Choosing your coverage path
Once you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you'll decide whether to add coverage through a Medicare Advantage plan, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, and a Part D prescription drug plan. Each path has trade-offs in cost, flexibility, and benefits. José explains them side by side so you can choose what fits your life in Lakeland.
